“…Notably, the GMV effects on the fMRI subsequent memory effect were mostly found in posterior brain regions despite the GMV age differences being most pronounced frontally (Figure 1A). This may be explained by the use of a visual encoding task and is in line with a recent study, in which angular gyrus GMV was found to predict differences in memory precision in older adults (Korkki et al, 2023). An inverse relationship between GMV and SMV was found in the precuneus and medial PFC (Table 1).…”

“…This general pattern of findings was replicated in participants with autism spectrum disorder and neurotypical controls in Cooper et al (2017). However, Korkki et al (2023) reported that fMRI BOLD activity…”

“…Echoing the findings of Greene and Naveh-Benjamin, Korkki and colleagues found only small differences in overall memory for the objects, but significant age-related declines in the precision of episodic retrieval. In a further study, Korkki et al [53] measured brain activity in younger and older adults in the retrieval phase of the same task, and found that age-related reductions in hippocampal activity were associated with poorer recall of object features, and that reductions in activity in the angular gyrus were specifically associated with an age-related decline in precision. This result implies that the older adults’ problems with precision lie at the retrieval phase, but a previous study [55] on young adults found that encoding activity in the inferior frontal gyrus and fusiform cortex was associated with both later success and precision of memory retrieval.…”
