Reduced Seminal Concentration of CD45pos Cells after Follicle-Stimulating Hormone Treatment in Selected Patients with Idiopathic Oligoasthenoteratozoospermia

Abstract: The present study evaluated the conventional sperm parameters and the seminal concentration of CD45pos cells (pan-leukocyte marker) of infertile patients with idiopathic oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OAT). The patients were arbitrarily divided into three groups treated with recombinant follicle-stimulating hormone FSH: α (Group A = 20 patients), recombinant FSH-β (Group B = 20 patients), and highly purified human FSH (Group C = 14 patients). All treated groups achieved a similar improvement of the main sperm p… Show more

“…It is important to note that we also found a significant increase of seminal fluid leukocyte concentration in responder patients. This evidence is in agreement with our previously observation that CD45-positive cells (pan-leukocyte marker) showed a positive linear correlation with the percentage of spermatids [ 16 ].…”

“…Scrotal ultrasound precisely evaluates testicular volume, the value of which is important when deciding whether varicocele repair is needed. It can be computed using the ellipsoid formula (length × width × thickness × 0.52), as described elsewhere [21]. Doppler ultrasound efficaciously indicates the varicocele grade, providing information on the maximum vein diameter and on the peak retrograde flow (PRF).…”

“…FSH has considerable biological roles in testicular function, such as cellular sperm differentiation, maturation of epididymal sperm, and adjustment of spermatid morphogenesis 9. Lacking of FSH would shorten testis size, sperm concentration, and sperm motility, hence FSH plays an important role in boosting cells proliferation and is desired for normal sperm production 1011.…”
