Rapid stopping of actions is crucial for survival. The algorithm underlying action-stopping is often described using the independent race model, where the race between independent go- and stop-processes determines whether one is able to stop. However, it is unclear whether humans have neural correlates of these processes. Here, using scalp potentials from three studies, we show that the mu (8-13 Hz) desynchronization over the contralateral motor cortex follows the predictions of a go-process: the activity builds up till an action is made. We also show that the low beta (13-20 Hz) activity over the frontal areas follows the predictions of a stop-process: the activity builds up after the stop signal and prior to the stopping latency. Using these neural correlates, we observed that: 1) The failure to stop mostly results from a rapid go-process, 2) The go-process seems to be influenced by the stop-process during the late stages of action-stopping, 3) Intrinsic prefrontal beta activity has a retardive effect on movement, 4) Violations of independence assumption in the failed stop trials may result from the activity of the stop-process. Future studies may use these neural correlates to resolve the mimicry between models of action-stopping.

A better understanding of the neural and muscular mechanisms underlying motor responses is essential for advancing neurorehabilitation protocols, brain-computer interfaces (BCI), feature engineering for biosignal classification algorithms, and identifying biomarkers of disease and performance enhancement strategies. In this study, we examined the neuromuscular dynamics of healthy individuals during a sequential finger-pinching task, focusing on the relationships between cortical oscillations and muscle activity in simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG) and electromyography (EMG) recordings. We contrasted two pairs of subsets of the dataset based on the latency of EMG onset: an across-subjects trait-based comparison and a within-subjects state-based comparison. Trait-based analyses showed that fast responders had higher baseline beta power, indicating stronger motor inhibition and efficient resetting of motor networks, and greater mu desynchronization during movement, reflecting enhanced motor cortex activation. Visual association areas also displayed more pronounced changes in different phases of the task in subjects with lower latency. Fast responders exhibited lower baseline EMG activity and stronger EMG power during movement initiation, showing effective motor inhibition and rapid muscle activation. State-based analyses revealed no significant EEG differences between fast and slow trials, while EMG differences were only detected after movement onset. These results highlight that fast response trait is related to electrophysiological differences at specific frequency bands and task phases, offering insights for enhancing motor function in rehabilitation, biomarker identification and BCI applications.

Background Psychomotor alterations are a common symptom in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). The primary motor cortex (M1) plays a vital role in the mechanism of psychomotor alterations. Post-movement beta rebound (PMBR) in the sensorimotor cortex is abnormal in patients with motor abnormalities. However, the changes in M1 beta rebound in patients with MDD remain unclear. This study aimed to primarily explore the relationship between psychomotor alterations and PMBR in MDD. Methods One hundred thirty-two subjects were enrolled in the study, comprising 65 healthy controls (HCs) and 67 MDD patients. All participants performed a simple right-hand visuomotor task during MEG scanning. PMBR was measured in the left M1 at the source reconstruction level with the time–frequency analysis method. Retardation factor scores and neurocognitive test performance, including the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), the Making Test Part A (TMT-A), and the Verbal Fluency Test (VFT), were used to measure psychomotor functions. Pearson correlation analyses were used to assess relationships between PMBR and psychomotor alterations in MDD. Results The MDD group showed worse neurocognitive performance than the HC group in all three neurocognitive tests. The PMBR was diminished in patients with MDD compared to HCs. In a group of MDD patients, the reduced PMBR was negatively correlated with retardation factor scores. Further, there was a positive correlation between the PMBR and DSST scores. PMBR is negatively associated with the TMT-A scores. Conclusion Our findings suggested that the attenuated PMBR in M1 could illustrate the psychomotor disturbance in MDD, possibly contributing to clinical psychomotor symptoms and deficits of cognitive functions.
