The environmental design of health facilities impacts on all users of the health‐care system, including patients, visitors, and staff. Each user has varying needs and expectations of the environment, potentially affecting their wellbeing. This chapter uses personal and social wellbeing indicators to explore the relationship between health‐care environments and wellbeing. Research shows that ambient features, surfacing (textures, colors), layout, presence or absence of technological aids, window views, access to outside, architectural structure, and overall location all impact on aspects of wellbeing. Links between wellbeing and environmental design exist, and can inform the refurbishment and construction of future health‐care environments.
