Reducing post-dates induction numbers with post-dates complementary therapy clinics

Abstract: This short discussion article examines induction of labour (IOL) and how complementary therapy clinics were established for post-dates pregnant women. The number of post-dates inductions performed 1 year after the clinics were established was 5% less than in the 1 year prior to their set up. The service has provided positive patient experience, and is being reviewed further. Consideration also has to be given to potential cost-savings when a reduction in medical inductions is recorded.

“…Considering our present findings and the results of previous studies, clary sage, lavender, and jasmine oils may exert gradual and accumulated effects on increasing the oxytocin level and stimulating the spontaneous onset of labor. In fact, repeated use of aromatherapy a few times a day or a week has been introduced to stimulate the spontaneous onset of labor [ 7 , 10 , 31 ]. Moreover, the repeated or continuous use of lavender or jasmine oil during labor until delivery shortened the duration of labor [ 9 , 15 , 16 , 17 ].…”

“…The effects of aromatherapy in reducing labor pain and anxiety in term pregnant women have also been investigated [ 9 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 ]. However, the effects of aromatherapy in stimulating the onset of spontaneous labor remain scarcely investigated, as there have been limited reports and reviews on such effects to date [ 7 , 8 , 10 , 22 , 23 , 24 , 29 , 30 , 31 ]. In the present study, we clarified the effects of an aromatherapy footbath prepared for enhancing the spontaneous onset of labor on the changes in the salivary oxytocin level of term pregnant women.…”

“…Stimulation of the foot reflexology point for the pituitary gland aims to facilitate oxytocin output [24]. From our initial data we observed a reduction in the number of post-dates inductions as a result of the clinic [18]. Patient feedback surveys obtained from women who attended the clinic were also extremely positive.…”

“…A study of 66 post-date women by Ingram and colleagues found that women using shiatsu were significantly more likely to labour spontaneously, with increased number going into labour if they used the three acupressure points (GB21, SP6, LI4) [16]. Other units have demonstrated some successes from post-dates CAM clinics [17, 18]. A Cochrane systematic review of the use of acupuncture for the inducing labour in post-dates pregnancies showed mixed results and concluded the need for well-designed randomised control trials to objectively assess outcomes [19].…”
