Recently, the development of green corrosion inhibitors and green inhibition strategies has become highly demanded due to the increased demand for green chemistry in the area of science and technology. This present research is about Dendrobium crumenatum (D. crumenatum), also known as pigeon orchid; a green additive to protect the mild steel coupon from corrosive effect in different seawater velocities. This study was held within 35 days of immersion with data interval of 7 days. Secondary metabolites in D. crumenatum play an important role in D. crumenatum as green additives. The chemical constituents of the D. crumenatum were investigated through Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The corrosion inhibition efficiency of D. crumenatum was analyzed through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Optical Microscope. To investigate the seawater velocity as disturbance factor to the corrosion inhibition, different seawater velocities ranging from 0 m/s, 0.074 m/s, 0.094 m/s, 0.114 m/s respectively were utilized using aerator. The rate of corrosion was tested via weight loss and potentiodynamic polarization. The present work showed that D. crumenatum has a good performance as green additive in minimizing corrosion effect on mild steel via the morphological analysis. Meanwhile, based on the result, highest velocities at 0.114 m/s had caused highest corrosion rate 0.19 mm/year after Day 35 which indicate that the oxidation process vigorously occurred at high velocity.

The analysis of anticorrosion coating by using Andrographis paniculata (kalmegh) leaves extract (KLE) as an additive to protect stainless steel 316L that immersed in seawater environment was successfully carried out. The anti-corrosive coating is the combination of selected binder, pigment, solvent, and additive. Andrographis paniculata leaves extract was selected as an additive due to excellent antioxidant properties. There are five types of coating with different concentration which are C1 (0 wt.%), C2 (3 wt.%), C3 (6 wt.%), C4 (9 wt.%) and C5 (12 wt.%). The coated substrate the immersed in seawater for 30 days and taken out for each subsequent 10 days for analysis. The analysis involves optical, electrochemical, and morphology studies. A few techniques involve including of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PP) and scanning electron microscope with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). The result of FTIR shows several functional group presence in the KLE that can enhance anti-oxidation properties such as phenol, carboxylic acid, carbonyl, and amide. The presence of andrographolide compound obtained from UV-vis analysis at peak absorption spectrum 229 nm. Electrochemical analysis result from EIS, the most efficiency coating was predicted at C3. Hence, it has higher R ct value and low C dl value. The result in EIS is corresponding to PP; hence the result of corrosion rate at C3 is the lowest value, which is 0.00211 mm/year at 30 th day immersion. The observation on the surface morphology of the coating also shows that C3 that has a smooth surface with less pitting, cracks, and salt precipitate when compared to another coating. The addition of KLE increases the efficiency of anticorrosion coating with optimum concentration, which is 6 wt.%.

Elaeis Guineensis Leaves Extracts as Eco-Friendly Corrosion Inhibitor for Mild Steel in Hydrochloric Acid

This manuscript presents a study on a green corrosion inhibitor extracted from Elaeis guineensis (EG) leaves for mild steel (MS) exposed to acidic condition. Weight loss measurement was conducted at various temperatures to investigate the corrosion inhibitive behaviour of the aqueous extract in 1 M HCl solution. Results demonstrated that both inhibition efficiency (η%) and surface coverage (θ) had increased with increasing inhibitor concentration, but decreased with increasing temperature. After immersion for 72 h, the inhibition efficiency were between 60.48% at 319 K and 73.81% at 298 K. Adsorption of extract onto the MS surface was shown to obey Langmuir’s adsorption isotherm while the free energy value (𝝙Gads) indicated that the adsorption was characteristic of physisorption. Formation of a protective film onto the metal surface was substantiated by SEM and EDX analyses. The study demonstrated that EG leaves is a potential metal corrosion inhibitor in acidic condition.
