Reduction of aflatoxin in freshly harvested maize using solar dryers

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Aflatoxin-contaminated grain consumption over the years has been known to result in serious health hazards for its consumers. The present study investigated the effects of harvest seasons and drying methods on aflatoxins in freshly harvested maize. A 2 × 3 × 3 × 3 × 3 factorial design was used; two harvesting seasons (dry and wet), maize varieties (P3966W, P4063W and P4226), moisture contents (0.15, 0.12, and 0.10 g kg −1 ), modern fabricated solar dryer (MFSD), hybrid biomass dryer (HBD) and open-… Show more

“…In general, AF concentrations decreased gradually with regards to the moisture content (15%–12%–10%). The highest concentrations of AF were observed in maize stored in polyethylene bags compared to jute or plastic containers [ 31 ]. The effect of drum drying on the production of Penicillium verrucosum and OTA in rye was studied by Kristensen, et al [ 32 ].…”

“…On other hands, the moisture for all feedstuffs was measured at average 7.41 and the correlation coefficient (R 2 ) was very small and did not show high variability between factor moisture and agents. The low moisture in the feedstuffs may be ascertain an excellence storage condition after harvest, where grains or other fresh commodities preserve in polyethylene sacks which can prevent from intensive contamination with mould [40,41].…”

“…It took 50 h to decrease moisture content from 0.60 to 0.059 g g -1 w.b. Oni et al (2022) compared modern fabricated solar dryer (MFSD) (Figure 37), hybrid biomass dryer (HBD) (Figure 38) and open-air drying (OAD) methods of maize to prevent aflatoxin-contamination. According to the results, a faster drying process with a reduction of aflatoxin in solar dried maize samples were obtained.…”
