Reduction of damage by the Mediterranean corn borer, Sesamia nonagrioides, and the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis, in maize fields by a trifluoromethyl ketone pheromone analog

Abstract: Large-scale field experiments on the Mediterranean corn borer, Sesamia nonagrioides Lefèbvre (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), were carried out in 2004 -2006 on maize [ Zea mays L. (Poaceae)] fields using ( Z )-11-hexadecenyl trifluoromethyl ketone, an antagonist analog of the pheromone of this species, to evaluate a possible reduction of damage caused by this pest. The effect of the treatments on the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis Hübner (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), a sympatric species, was also determined. Eva… Show more

“…In this regard, there is a remarkable reduction in damage induced by S. nonagrioides and O. nubilalis in maize fi elds treated with an analog of the major component of S. nonagrioides pheromone (Solé et al, 2008a). However, and based on the effect of plant volatiles on pheromone perception (see above), the presence of plant volatiles in these fi eld experiments may interfere with the inhibitory effect of these antagonists on the response of males.…”

“…Very recently, a significant reduction of damage by the Mediterranean corn borer (MCB) Sesamia nonagrioides and the European corn borer O. nubilalis in maize fields has been noticed by utilization of a trifluoromethyl ketone analogue of the MCB pheromone. 158) Effectiveness of the treatment was particularly high for the most damaging second generation of both pests.…”

“…While mixtures of pheromone and attraction antagonists have shown promising results in mating disruption of several species, the potential of parapheromones as mating disruptants has been investigated less (Renou and Guerrero, 2000;Sole et al, 2008). In the case of C. gnidiella, there is a strong interest in developing a mating disruption strategy to produce pesticide-free wine with higher market value, especially in regions of the world in which pheromonebased control strategies are already in place for other grapevine pests.…”
