“…At the end of the large, multiarmed study of Richter et al, the MMF group showed the mildest coronary vessel disease in their transplanted hearts 27 . MMF also reduced the migration of host LFA‐1 + leukocytes into the myocardium and perivascular spaces of graft arteries, and decreased endothelial expression of the cell adhesion molecule ICAM‐1 28 . This same dose of MMF reduced immunoreactivity for CD4, CD8, CD11a, and CD18 in the perivascular space around intracardiac and epicardiac arteries of rat heart allografts, indicative of reduced leukocyte infiltration 27 …”

“…In a rat heterotopic heart transplantation model, a significant reduction in ICAM-1 expression was observed in mycophenolate mofetil (MMF)-treated animals. 43 In addition, LFA-1 infiltration and TIH were reduced when compared with a group treated with cyclosporine and tacrolimus (FK 506).…”

“…The discordance between rejection and graft survival was credited to an independent protective effect of MPA. This independent protective effect has been demonstrated previously in animal models of both renal and cardiac transplantation and has been attributed to reduction in leukocyte infiltration and resultant graft vasculopathy . It is unknown if this is a dose‐related effect; however, the animal models cited used weight‐based dosing equivalent to 3000 mg per day or greater.…”
