Reduction of inequalities in health: assessing evidence-based tools

Abstract: BackgroundThe reduction of health inequalities is a focus of many national and international health organisations. The need for pragmatic evidence-based approaches has led to the development of a number of evidence-based equity initiatives. This paper describes a new program that focuses upon evidence- based tools, which are useful for policy initiatives that reduce inequities.MethodsThis paper is based on a presentation that was given at the "Regional Consultation on Policy Tools: Equity in Population Health … Show more

“…Jack and Tonmyr (Jack & Tonmyr,) applied Lavis’ model of KTE and referred to the importance of messages containing credible information. The final operational element noted was that multiple types of message are important , which reflected the use of different research methods to generate messages and the potential for research to have different messages to transfer.…”

“…Although some number of tools have been developed [98], there is a need to expand the evidence on what policies are achieving a reduction in inequalities, as pioneered in the Netherlands at the local level, and to communicate this research at an international level. Possibly, the main challenge to date lies in evaluating the impact of policies targeting socio-economic groups given the short supply of good-quality evidence to guide policy; the need of new and more consistent data for comparative national-level analysis, and further, a need to taking advantage of natural experiments (for example, changes in employment opportunities, housing provision or cigarette pricing).…”
