Reduction of Magnetite from Copper Smelting Slag using Petro-diesel and Biodiesel

Abstract: Experiments were carried out in a slag cleaning electric furnace to reduce magnetite in copper smelting slag using petro-diesel or biodiesel produced from waste cooking oil, and the reduction effects using the two reducing agents were compared. The pyrolysis experiments of petro-diesel and biodiesel were carried out in a fixed bed reactor to study their pyrolysis characteristics and explore the reduction mechanism of magnetite in copper smelting slag. The experimental results showed that the primary crystallin… Show more

“…In HYBRIT, the coking coal in steelmaking is replaced with hydrogen in a direct reduction process, thus replacing the traditional blast furnace [25,26]. The recovery of valuables in copper slag cleaning by alternative reducing agents, such as hydrogen, biodiesel, and CO-CH 4 -Ar gas mixtures, has been studied by Nagasaka et al [27], Li et al [28], and Huaiwei et al [29], respectively. It was recognized that these could be viable options for replacing coke.…”

“…Magnetite is common in many ore deposits and host rocks, and its presence in CSFT was expected. [39] Fayalite represents a ferrous iron silicate that belongs to the olivine minerals group. In CSFT, fayalite is the artificial mineral that arises in a high temperature process with low oxygen amount (calcination process) with a naturally elevated amount of silicon dioxide.…”

“…The gaseous reducing agents used in the processes of copper recovery from slags are usually hydrogen, methane, carbon monoxide or natural gas [ 45 , 46 , 47 ]. It should also be mentioned that there are also studies aimed at replacing the solid carbon reducing agents with biomass and waste oils [ 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 , 53 , 54 , 55 , 56 ].…”
