Reemergence of Adenovirus Type 4 Acute Respiratory Disease in Military Trainees: Report of an Outbreak during a Lapse in Vaccination

Abstract: From 23 April to 13 May 1995, an outbreak of acute respiratory disease (ARD) hospitalizations occurred in basic training soldiers at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Weekly hospitalization rates for the most affected military unit reached 11.6%. Virus isolation and serologic studies from a sample of patients identified the agent as adenovirus type 4. Prior to starting vaccinations against adenovirus types 4 and 7 in 1971, these serotypes were the major causes of ARD in basic trainees. No outbreaks were reported w… Show more

“…Meanwhile, HAdV-E infection predominated among children aged 8 years in the present study, and in addition to the routine surveillance, HAdV-E was isolated from all 5 samples of children in an event of class closure due to the spread of respiratory illness at an elementary school in Osaka in 2012 (data not shown). These results support the previous report that HAdV-E4 was associated with respiratory infection in adults and children and can cause outbreaks (11).…”

“…Epidemic levels of HAdV-B7 have been low in the recent years in Japan, and detection of both HAdV-B14 and -B55 has not been reported thus far (http: www.nih.go.jp niid en iasr-e.html). Acute respiratory diseases are typically caused by HAdV-E4, -B7, -B14, and -B55 (11)(12)(13). HAdV-D has occasionally been reported as a cause of respiratory infections (14), and molecular epidemiological study of HAdVs associated with epidemic keratoconjunctivitis showed circulation of HAdV-D37 and -D53 in Osaka (5).…”

“…The reemergence of HAdV-caused ARD during a temporary lapse of vaccine coverage in 1994-1995 is documented in a study noting an 11.6% rate of ARD hospitalization in a military group in the week ending 6 May 1995. The following week brought a rate of 3%, with HAdV-4 characterized in 85.7% of the cases (3).…”
