Reevaluation of the hadronic contribution to the muon magnetic anomaly using new e + e −→π + π − cross section data from BABAR

Abstract: Using recently published, high-precision π + π − cross section data by the BABAR experiment from the analysis of e + e − events with high-energy photon radiation in the initial state, we reevaluate the lowest order hadronic contribution (a had,LO μ ) to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. We employ newly developed software featuring improved data interpolation and averaging, more accurate error propagation and systematic validation. With the new data, the discrepancy between the e + e − -and τ -based re… Show more

“…The anomalous magnetic moment a µ = (g − 2) µ /2 has been determined at BNL [45] to be a µ (exp) = (11 659 208.9±6.3)×10 −10 , which may be compared to the SM prediction [46] a µ (SM ) = (11 659 183.4 ± 4.9) × 10 −10 . This 3-4σ tension of (SM) theory and experiment could be a hint for physics beyond the SM, and may be attributed to supersymmetric contributions [47], but it is also possible that some other additional cause is responsible for some or all of the deviation.…”

“…The precise measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment (the muon g − 2) [3,4] has shown discrepancy from the SM prediction [5][6][7][8][9][10]. With dedicated efforts to determine hadronic contributions precisely, the latest result is ∆a µ ≡ a µ (exp) − a µ (SM) = (26.1 ± 8.0) × 10 −10 ,…”

“…For instance, refs. [107,108] estimate ∆aµ ≃ −(2.5 ± 0.8) × 10 −9 using e + e − data or ∆aµ ≃ −(1.6 ± 0.8) × 10 −9 using τ data.…”
