Reference equations for the 6-minute walk distance in healthy Portuguese subjects 18–70 years old

Abstract: The present study was the first to describe the 6MWD in healthy Portuguese people aged 18-70 years old and to propose predictive equations. These can contribute to improving the evaluation of Caucasian Mediterranean patients with diseases that affect their functional capacity.

“…An alternative hypothesis is that gender differences in body fat distribution may lead to decreased gait efficiency in females [ 31 ]. The significant contribution of weight is in partial agreement with the findings of Enright [ 14 ], Trooster [ 8 ], Casanova [ 12 ], Zou [ 11 ], Oliveira [ 13 ], suggesting that when 6MWDs are reported in future studies, they should also be corrected for weight.…”

“…However, this range is the age at which the vast majority of the patients with cardiopulmonary pathologies manifest their illnesses. We did not measured the ΔHR (the difference between hearth rate at the end of the test and HR at rest), a parameter representing the level of effort the subject expends during the test [ 11 ] and that has been reported to be positively associated to the 6MWD [ 13 ].…”

“…20 The 6MWD in healthy adults has been reported to range from 400 to 700 m. 21 There are several nonstandardized reference equations for 6MWD from healthy adult populations; their value has not been established due to high variation mainly attributed to the fact that different methodologies were used in various studies (Table 1). 2238 Age, height, weight, sex, corridor distance, impaired cognition and need for continuous oxygen supplementation may independently affect the 6MWD in patients and therefore these factors should be taken into consideration when interpreting the results of 6MWT. 5,6…”

“…In clinical practice, validated exercise tests to evaluate functional capacity, such as step and walk tests, are widely used in healthy ( 17 , 21 , 30 , 31 ) and disabled people ( 8 , 15 , 18 , 32 - 34 ). Arcuri et al ( 30 ) determined the validity of the 6MST and established reference equations based on the 6MST performance using a sample of 91 subjects (42 men and 49 women) with a mean age of 39 years.…”
