Reference values for lung function tests: I. Static volumes

Abstract: Static lung volume (LV) measurements have a number of clinical and research applications; however, no previous studies have provided reference values for such tests using a healthy sample of the adult Brazilian population. With this as our main purpose, we prospectively evaluated 100 non-smoking subjects (50 males and 50 females), 20 to 80 years old, randomly selected from more than 8,000 individuals. Gender-specific linear prediction equations were developed by multiple regression analysis with total lung cap… Show more

“…This study is the second communication in a sequence of descriptions of reference values for lung function tests (other than spirometry) which were obtained in a carefully randomly selected sample (5). This experiment provides the first set of predictive equations for some clinically useful indexes of muscular respiratory strength obtained for a randomly selected sample of healthy adult Brazilians.…”

“…Lung spirometry: A computerized spirometer was employed (Pony Spirometer Graphics-Cosmed, Rome, Italy) according to the guidelines of the American Thoracic Society (1991/ 1994) and the I Brazilian Consensus on Spirometry (1996) [13][14][15] . Documented variables included forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV 1 ), maximum voluntary ventilation (MVV), maximum midexpiratory flow at 25% and 50% (MMEF25%/50%), and the FEV 1 /FVC ratio.…”

“…At least three MIP and three MEP maneuvers were recorded. The pulmonary function testing results were expressed as percentage of the predicted values for the Brazilian population [15][16][17] . The participants also completed two encouraged 6MWT in a 30-m hospital corridor, following recommendations 17 .…”
