Refining a Workload Control (WLC) concept: a case study

Abstract: The paper focuses on refining a Workload Control (WLC) concept to improve the applicability of the approach to the shop characteristics found in practice. This is a two-stage process leading to significant conceptual refinements to a key WLC methodology. The first stage focuses on the development of a Decision Support System (DSS) based on a WLC concept designed for Make-To-Order (MTO) companies. Refinements made include changes to the backwards scheduling procedure and the way in which jobs are released onto … Show more

“…While a few WLC systems are presented in the literature, information requirements for such systems to be effective have not been explicitly articulated. In addition, previous empirical studies suggest that the inherent information flow in MTO companies is typically fuzzy and incomplete (Silva, Roque, and Almeida 2006;Stevenson 2006;Stevenson et al 2011), which explains the challenges encountered in WLC implementation and confirms the need for effective information management. In response, this paper is motivated by the following research question:…”

“…Intelligent computer systems are playing an increasingly significant role in embedding the WLC concept in practice; although this is subject to information availability (see Silva, Roque, and Almeida 2006;Stevenson 2006;Stevenson, Huang, and Hendry 2009). While a few WLC systems are presented in the literature, information requirements for such systems to be effective have not been explicitly articulated.…”

“…Rozwiązanie to stanowi alternatywę dla czasochłonnych i kosztochłonnych metod symulacyjnych, w których, choć planowanie realizacji zlecenia jest dużo bardziej dokładne, nie jest możliwe szybkie (w trybie "on line") przygotowanie informacji do procesu negocjacji warunków umowy z klientem. 13 …”

“…Input-output control has received a lot of attention in the scientific literature in recent years (Kingsman 2000, Oosterman et al 2000, Haskose et al 2002, 2004, Henrich et al 2004, Stevenson 2006, Land 2006, Stevenson and Hendry 2006, to cite only a few of them). Moodie 1999 andMoodie andBobrowski 1999 looked at the problem of demand management and considered the acceptance and due date assignment decisions.…”
