Refining an Entrepreneurial Mindset Master Concept Map through Multi-Institutional Collaboration

Abstract: Over the past decade, there has been a substantial increase in the demand for the integration of entrepreneurial mindset (EM) into training of undergraduate engineering students. Although the engineering education field recognizes the importance of training related to this mindset, the assessment of EM development has lagged behind its implementation. Concept maps (cmaps) offer potential for direct EM assessment as they can provide a snapshot of students' conceptual understanding at a specific time point. A cm… Show more

“…Scoring concept maps using Categorical Scoring considers the number of categories used and the links between categories to develop another standardized metric. Additionally, other work with EM concept maps have identified other sets of categories that are similar to our codes and that build off of years of concept mapping and EM expertise [6], [29]. Future work could compare the sets of categories to gain further insights into the use of concept maps in our courses.…”

“…In addition to concept mapping being an important metacognition activity for students studying complex topics, concept mapping also directly forces students to make connections between topics which is a key component of the Entrepreneurial Mindset. As a subset of this study, fill-in concept maps have been used at a large midwestern university [7]. A fill-in concept map provides the structure of the map along with a word bank of concepts that the student is expected to use to fill it in.…”
