“…However, comorbid factors especially a history of smoking, play an important role in relation with cutaneous microcirculation. We confirmed this in previous studies using in vivo RMCM (Altintas et al,2008a). Indeed, this could have been contributing to the contrary results of studies on cutaneous microcirculation, as a smoking history and other comorbidities were not fully considered as influencing factors (Goldberg et al,1990; Orenstein et al,1988; Park et al,1997).…”

“…Reflectance‐Mode‐Confocal‐Microscopy (RMCM) is a high‐resolution imaging technique to noninvasively investigate human skin in vivo and in real‐time. Using this technique, detailed evaluation and investigation of the histomorphology and microcirculation of the skin was carried out and published (Altintas et al,2008a; Gonzalez et al,2004; Rajadhyaksha et al,1999). In earlier studies, we could show disturbances of arterial and venous perfusion in free musculocutaneous latissimus dorsi flaps (Altintas et al,2008b).…”

“…This application is known as "confocal laser-scanning capillaroscopy" and it has been used to assess and quantify the morphological and dynamic changes of microcirculation occurring in normal skin under external stress conditions, such as cigarette smoking [26] and environmental temperature [27]. In addition, previous ex vivo [28] and in vivo [21] RCM studies have preliminarily described morphological changes of the epidermis, dermis and capillaries of the upper dermis in SSc patients.…”

“…It seems that the advent of non‐invasive imaging techniques has not yet reached its full potential and more approaches and applications are still being described. Very recently, a study of the dynamic properties of capillaries influenced by nicotine was published (10), which underlines the increased interest in capillary imaging. The use of CLSC will hopefully find its place in the increasing armamentarium of diagnostic procedures that are available to the dermatologist.…”
