Reflexive Thematic Analysis for Applied Qualitative Health Research

Abstract: Thematic analysis is a widely cited method for analyzing qualitative data. As a team of graduate students, we sought to explore methods of data analysis that were grounded in qualitative philosophies and aligned with our orientation as applied health researchers. We identified reflexive thematic analysis, developed by Braun and Clarke, as an interpretive method firmly situated within a qualitative paradigm that would also have broad applicability within a range of qualitative health research designs. In this a… Show more

“…Finally, all transcripts were re-read for reflection and to ensure that interpretation of participants’ data was captured authentically by the categorisation matrix. Direct quotations from participants were cross-checked against the categories to ensure the categories were reflective of the participants’ narrative [ 59 , 60 ]. While the researchers had predetermined topics for discussion within the interviews, the generic and sub-categories themselves were generated from the interview data using the process described.…”

“…Our data analytic process followed six steps: (1) data familiarization, (2) initial code generation, (3) generating initial themes, (4) reviewing themes, (5) refining, defining, and naming themes, and (6) producing the report [ 28 ]. We also adapted our method according to Campbell and colleagues (2021) process with applied qualitative health research [ 29 ].…”

“…A constant comparative analytic approach was then applied, comparing similarities and differences both within and across cases; with the intent of our applied research question remaining at the forefront ( Thorne, 2016 ). Developing patterns were defined, described and challenged in analytic memos and relationships between patterns were explored through a process of diagramming ( Campbell et al, 2021 ; Terry et al, 2017 ; Thorne, 2016 ). Primary analysis was completed independently by (EO), however, a sample of transcripts were reviewed and discussed among team members (MB, AG & SJ), and developing patterns were discussed as a research team throughout the analytic process.…”
