Specifically, I analyze 100 tweets that include #refugeesnotwelcome, and explore how this hashtag is used to express negative feelings, beliefs and ideologies toward refugees and (im)migrants in Europe. “…The importance of Twitter discourse in the domain of politics cannot be ignored. The previous researches exploring the use of Twitter (and other such platforms) from "critical" perspective for the construction of ideology and power have emphasized upon the need for further researches in this domain (such as Bouvier, 2015;Bouvier & Machin, 2018;Kreis, 2017). “…As such, this article reflects on 'the refugee crisis' that saw the mainstreaming of racism globally. The mediatization and politicization of the 'refugee crisis' and anti-refugee rhetoric in Europe (see Goodman et al, 2017;Kreis, 2017;Krzyżanowski et al, 2018;Rettberg and Gajjala, 2016;Triandafyllidou, 2018) and their portrayal on global media with a political hostility accompanied by negative discourses (see Balabanova and Trandafoiu, 2020;Schuster, 2011) received much attention in the existing research. By harnessing widespread user reactions on Twitter, this article studies Turkey as a new migrant destination and breaks down the common themes of the online racist messages towards Syrians, when they have settled down in Turkey in the late 2010s.…”

“…After the attacks, rising levels of online hate speech and the fear that they might cause physical attacks became a matter of concern (Müller and Schwarz, 2017). The hashtags #Merkelsommer -Merkel's summer -and #Merkelmussweg -Merkel should go -were among the most-discussed topics on Twitter, asking for the resignation of chancellor Angela Merkel, along with general messages against refugees, such as the Twitter hashtag #refugeesNOTwelcome (Kreis, 2017) gaining popularity. 9 Recurring political rallies against the chancellor and her policies were held, and many politicians released comments attacking the open-border policy.…”

“…The first tweet that contained #refugeesnotwelcome appeared on 10 August 2015(Kreis, 2017). The hashtag has been recurrently used since then in relation to the refugee crisis, including variants such as #rapefugeesnotwelcome after the New Year's Eve sexual assaults in Cologne in 2016.…”
