Regeneration of Pelargonium × hederaefolium ‘Bonete’ from petiole explants

Abstract: The ad ven ti tious shoot re gen er a tion from pet i ole explants of Pelargonium × hederaefolium 'Bonete' was achieved via a mixed path way i.e. organogenesis and so matic embryogenesis. The histological study of re gen er ated structures re vealed the pres ence of both shoot primordia and embryo-like struc tures. The ini tial growth in pet i ole explants occurred on me dia with BAP + auxin or TDZ alone. How ever, the most ef fec tive re gen er a tion (24 struc tures/explant) was noted in the pres ence of TDZ… Show more

“…Meta‐topolin, cytokinin used for micropropogation , is a highly active aromatic cytokinin usually used for organogenesis (shoot and root regeneration), for example in Hypericum sp. , Ananas comosus or Pelargonium × hederaefolium ‘Bonete’ . To our knowledge, meta‐topolin has not been used for micropropagation any bulbous plants.…”

“…In Pelargonium peltatum hybrids, there is a report about the regeneration of somatic embryos from petiole-derived suspension cultures using a medium with α-naphthaleneacetic acid and thidiazuron followed by a transfer to a medium with only thidiazuron and a subsequent transfer to a medium without plant growth regulators (Robichon et al 1997). There is another report about the regeneration of somatic embryolike structures from petioles using 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) or thidiazuron in different combinations with indole-3-acetic acid or indole-3-butyric acid (Wojtania et al 2004). In all these reports, the classification of regenerating structures as somatic embryos is unconvincing.…”

“…Articles published so far have enumerated the following cultivars of Pelargonium × hortorum : "Bargpalais", "Holywood Red", "Grand Prix", "Jazz Rocky Mountain", "Orbit White", "Scarlet Orbit", "Red Elite", "Ringo Rose", "Ringo Salmon", "White Rocky Mountain", and Pelargonium × hederaefolium ! "Beach", "Bonete", "Luna", "Sofie Cascade", and such like (Desiltes et al, 1993;Murthy et al, 1996;Mithila et al, 2001;Wojtania and Gabryszewska, 2001;Wojtania, 2010;Wojtania et al, 2004;Madden et al, 2005), with petals having many colors, different foliage types and growth habits. In our experiments, we focused on the elaboration of a convenient propagation medium for Pelargonium × domesticum.…”

“…In commercial production, new cultivation technologies and healthy starting materials are of crucial importance (Murthy et al, 1996;Wojtania et al, 2004;Milošević et al, 2012). An in vitro culture provides an ideal opportunity to overcome those factors which could limit efficient propagation.…”
