Regime Shift of the Sea Level Trend in the South China Sea Modulated by the Tropical Pacific Decadal Variability

Abstract: During the altimeter era, the sea level in the South China Sea (SCS) and western tropical Pacific (WTP) experienced significant decadal variability. The sea level rose during 1993–2009 and fell during 2010–2019. The decadal variability of Walker Circulation associated with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation can explain the sea level variability in the WTP to a great extent. The wind forced westward propagating Rossby waves increased (decreased) the sea level in the WTP during 1993–2009 (2010–2019). However, the i… Show more

“…The GRACE-based sea-level-acceleration pattern reveals that the strong positive/negative accelerations in the Kuroshio and Kuroshio-extension regions [48,49] are significant. While it is insignificant based on the difference between satellite altimetry and IAP steric sea level, this could be explained by the relatively low resolution of GRACE observations, which is unable to capture all underlying processes, especially in the Kuroshio-extension region.…”

“…In the northern SCS, the sea level is relatively higher in winter and lower in summer. This is mainly due to the influence of winter monsoons, which transport seawater from the southern to the northern SCS, resulting in a rise in sea level [73]. In recent years, the intensity of monsoon activity along the northern SCS coast demonstrates a more pronounced weakening trend during the summer and autumn [74].…”
