Regional Economic Impact of the Lake Texoma (Oklahoma-Texas) Striped Bass Fishery

Abstract: An economic impact study was conducted in 1990 to determine the regional economic impact of the Lake Texoma sportfishery. Lake Texoma, a 36,000‐hectare impoundment of the Red River on the Oklahoma‐Texas border, is nationally recognized for its striped bass (Morone saxatilis) fishery. Angler expenditures were estimated using data from mail, telephone, and roving creel surveys. The IMPLAN (IMpact Analysis for PLANning) modelling system was used to evaluate the effect of fishing expenditures on the regional econo… Show more

“…Lake Texoma serves vitally important services to the surrounding area, including, but not limited to, flood control, power generation, recreational fisheries, and boating. A predominant service of Lake Texoma revolves around the self-sustaining, inland striped bass fishery, the loss of which could amount to tens of millions of dollars annually to the region (see Schorr et al, 1995). More importantly continued and increasing eutrophication stands to adversely affect countless ecological, economic, and social services provided by Lake Texoma.…”

“…From 1965 to 1974, Lake Texoma was stocked with striped bass (Morone saxatilis) which have since established a selfsustaining reproductive population and supports a recreational striped bass fishery that generates tens of millions of dollars annually (Matthews et al, 1989;Schorr et al, 1995). A unique combination of high nutrient loading and turbidity, fisheries management, and sub-tropical seasonality has created a system containing a diverse array of daphniid zooplankton species cooccurring and/or alternating with a small cladoceran-copepodrotifer assemblage more typical of lakes with high fish planktivory (Franks et al, 2001;Threlkeld, 1986;Work and Gophen, 1995).…”

“…2002). For example, the impact analysis for planning (IMPLAN) modelling system evaluated the effect of fishing expenditures (US$25.641 million in 1990) on the regional economy bordering Lake Texoma (USA) (Schorr et al . 1995).…”

“…It was constructed in 1944 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers as a flood control reservoir but also is used for hydroelectric power production and supports an important striped bass sport fishery (Schorr et al, 1995). Buncombe Creek is located on the north shore of Lake Texoma in Marshall Co., Oklahoma (Fig.…”
