Abstract. In this paper, we implement the region-ofinfluence (ROI) approach for modelling probabilities of heavy 1-day and 5-day precipitation amounts in the Czech Republic. The pooling groups are constructed according to (i) the regional homogeneity criterion (assessed by a built-in regional homogeneity test), which requires that in a pooling group the distributions of extremes are identical after scaling by the at-site mean; and (ii) the 5T rule, which sets the minimum number of stations to be included in a pooling group for estimation of a quantile corresponding to return period T . The similarity of sites is evaluated in terms of climatological and geographical site characteristics. We carry out a series of sensitivity analyses by means of Monte Carlo simulations in order to explore the importance of the individual site attributes, including hybrid pooling schemes that combine both types of the site attributes with different relative weights.We conclude that in a dense network of precipitation stations in the Czech Republic (on average 1 station in a square of about 20×20 km), the actual distance between the sites plays the most important role in determining the similarity of probability distributions of heavy precipitation. There are, however, differences between the optimum pooling schemes depending on the duration of the precipitation events. While in the case of 1-day precipitation amounts the pooling scheme based on the geographical proximity of sites outperforms all hybrid schemes, for multi-day amounts the inclusion of climatological site characteristics (although with much lower weights compared to the geographical distance) enhances the performance of the pooling schemes. This finding is in agreement with the climatological expectation since multi-day heavy precipitation events are more closely linked Correspondence to: L. Gaál (ladislav.gaal@gmail.com) to some typical precipitation patterns over central Europe (related e.g. to the varied roles of Atlantic and Mediterranean influences) while the dependence of 1-day extremes on climatological characteristics such as mean annual precipitation is much weaker.The findings of the paper show a promising perspective for an application of the ROI methodology in evaluating outputs of regional climate models with high resolution: the pooling schemes might serve for defining weighting functions, and the large spatial variability in the grid-box estimates of high quantiles of precipitation amounts may efficiently be reduced.

Abstract:The depth-duration-frequency curves and isopluvial maps for the region encompassing South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia were developed using the available rainfall data. The aim was to update the existing intensity-duration-frequency curves in the region and obtain these curves at ungauged sites throughout the region using the newly developed rainfall frequency analysis techniques. A total of 17 durations ranging from 15 minutes to 120 hours for return periods of 2, 10, 25, 50, and 100 years were analyzed. The L-moment method with X-10 test was used to search for homogeneous regions within the study area. It was found that the method was either unable to homogeneous regions that were geographically contiguous or too many stations had to be eliminated before a region could be considered homogenous. Finally, at-site statistics were calculated to develop frequency relationships. Normal, lognormal, generalized extreme value, Pearson type III, and log Pearson type III probability distribution functions were used to fit the maximum annual precipitation data at each gauging site for each duration. The chi-squared goodness-of-fit test was used to determine the best fit probability distribution. The new intensity-duration-frequency curves were found to be lower than the existing curves developed in 1986. The difference between the two set of curves was found to be due to the removal of the outliers in the present study and the existence of the post 1986 drought conditions in the region. The spatial interpolation of the rainfall intensity from the depthduration-frequency curves was found to yield accurate intensity-duration-frequency curves and could be used to develop these curves at ungauged sites in the study area.

Regional frequency analysis of heavy precipitation amounts based on the estimation of the parameters of a regional distribution function using L-moments is adopted for the specific geographical-climatological settings of Slovakia. The paper focuses on the first step of the regional L-moment algorithm (Hosking, Wallis, 1997), which is the delineation of homogeneous regions. Objective and process-based logical pooling techniques are used to form homogeneous pooling groups of rainfall gauging stations for regional frequency analysis of k-day precipitation amounts (k = 1 to 5 days). Even though the delineation of homogeneous regions by means of objective methods is generally accepted and recommended in the literature, it is concluded here that such a pooling of similar sites should not be carried out automatically in precipitation analysis. Instead, a combination of physical/geomorphological considerations and objective methods should be preferred. Článok sa zaoberá regionálnou frekvenčnou analýzou mimoriadnych úhrnov zrážok, ktorá je založená na odhade parametrov regionálneho rozdelenia pravdepodobnosti pomocou L-momentov a ktorá sa aplikuje v špecifických geograficko-klimatických podmienkach Slovenska. Článok je užšie zameraný na prvý krok tzv. regionálneho L-momentového algoritmu (Hosking, Wallis, 1997), ktorým je vyčlenenie homogénnych regiónov pre k-denné úhrny zrážok (k = 1 až 5). Na formovanie homogénnych zoskupení klimatologických a zrážkomerných staníc sa použila objektívna aj subjektívna (logická) metodika. Napriek tomu, že odborná literatúra všeobecne uznáva a odporúča použiť objektívne postupy na vyčlenenie homogénnych regiónov, v štúdii sme usúdili, že by sa vo frekvenčnej analýze úhrnov zrážok navzájom podobné stanice nemali vyčleňovať automaticky. Namiesto toho odporúčame, aby sa k tomuto účelu použila kombinácia objektívnych postupov, resp. úvah založených na fyzicko-geografických charakteristikách krajiny.KĽÚČOVÉ SLOVÁ: Slovensko, maximálne 1-až 5-denné úhrny zrážok, kalendárny rok, teplý/chladný polrok, regionálna frekvenčná analýza, homogénne regióny, L-momenty, zhluková analýza.
