Ciencias Marinas (2005) AbstractThe accumulation of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) in surface sediments (<63 µm) of the Ferrol and Corme-Laxe rias was studied. These two rias have opposite characteristics from the point of view of both the morphology and the anthropogenic impact. Low metal concentrations were found in the Corme-Laxe Ria, with the highest values observed in the Anllóns River estuary, probably due to a higher lithogenic composition of the sediments. Concentrations in the Corme-Laxe Ria (Cd, 0.10 ± 0.03 µg g -l ; Cu, 5 ± 2 µg g -l ; Pb, 12 ± 4 µg g -l ; and Zn, 49 ± 17 µg g -l ) can be used as a good reference for metal background values for sediments from the 18 Galician rias. Although these background values are lower than those previously reported for the Galician coast, they are similar to those found in other uncontaminated coastal and marine systems. The highest concentrations for Ferrol were generally found in the middle part of the ria, which receives the most important urban and industrial impact. The values obtained show evident metal contamination in the middle and inner parts of the Ferrol Ria, with enrichment factors of 4-10 for Cd, 5 for Cu, 2-3 for Pb and 4-5 for Zn.Key words: heavy metals, contamination, sediments, background values, Ferrol, Corme-Laxe, Galicia. ResumenSe estudió la acumulación de metales pesados (Cd, Cu, Pb y Zn) en el sedimento (<63 µm) superficial en las rías de Ferrol y Corme-Laxe, las cuales poseen características contrapuestas tanto desde el punto de vista de su morfología como de su influencia urbana e industrial. La ría de Corme-Laxe presentó bajos niveles de metales en los sedimentos, siendo mayores en el estuario del Río Anllóns probablemente debido a un mayor grado litogénico de los sedimentos. Las concentraciones obtenidas en la ría de Laxe (0.10 ± 0.03 µg g -l de Cd, 5 ± 2 µg g -l de Cu, 12 ± 4 µg g -l de Pb y 49 ± 17 µg g -l de Zn) resultan una buena referencia de valores naturales de fondo para metales en las 18 rías gallegas. Aunque éstos son menores a otros considerados para la costa gallega, son similares a los medidos a nivel mundial en sedimentos marinos no contaminados. En Ferrol, las máximas concentraciones de metales se presentan generalmente en la parte media de la ría, donde se localiza el mayor núcleo de población y buena parte de la actividad industrial. Los datos allí obtenidos señalan la existencia de una evidente contaminación metálica en la parte media e interna de la ría de Ferrol con factores de enriquecimiento comprendidos entre 4-10 para Cd, 5 para Cu, 2-3 para Pb y 4-5 para Zn.

Epiphytic lichens are well-known indicators of air contamination. The chemical composition of lichens is affected by the concentration of pollutants in the environment. Usually, researchers assess long-term variations in trace elements or other pollutants in the study area or identify the spatial features of air contamination. The aim of this study is to create a database of trace element concentrations in the samples of the epiphytic lichen Hypogymnia physodes growing in the Kaliningrad region. The database can be used as a 'reference point' for monitoring studies. Another objective is to identify the spatial patterns of iron, manganese, nickel, cadmium, silver, lead, strontium, rubidium, and calcium in the Kaliningrad region. The samples of wild lichens were collected from pine and birch trees 1.2-1.8 m from the bases of the threes, using a regular grid, in August 2010. One-two-year-old thalli were used in the chemical analysis. The metals Ag, Cd, Cu, Pb, Ni, Fe, Mn, and Zn were determined by AAS (Mn, Fe by flame AAS and the others by ETA-AAS) and the elements Sr, Rb, and Ca by X-ray fluorescence. The concentration of metals in the western coastal area (the Sambian or Kaliningrad Peninsula) is higher than it is in the central and eastern parts of the region. Principal component factor analysis was carried out to detect and characterise different pollution sources and to identify the most polluted areas. The factors of metal emission were described. The authors examined the features of the spatial distribution of trace elements. Prevailing winds are form southwest. Therefore, the highest concentrations of trace elements were found on the Sambian peninsula and on the coasts of the Vistula and Curonian Lagoons. The high concentrations of trace elements in the samples of the lichen H.physodes, which were observed in the coastal part of the region, are associated with human impact and subsequent pollution. The chemical composition of lichens on the Sambian peninsula may have developed under the impact of both local pollution sources -vehicles, thermal energy facilities, and portsand such factors as transboundary traffic and sea spray.

São João Drainage Basin is an important and strategic waterbody located in one of the most popular turism region of Brazil. However, the fast economic and subsequent population growth in that region have created untreated wastes from several anthropogenic activities, which include the trace metals disposal in the surface water. This study aims to relate the major ions and trace metals behavior along one year sampling campaign, giving information about their source and chemical control in the three main fluvial compartments of the drainage basin. The chemical data reveals that the pluviosity is the main responsible for the physicochemical parameters and the water dissolved constituents' variations. The geological and anthropogenic contributions, which are the main sources of water constituents, were assessed by the Inorganic Chemical Index. Those data corroborates the great influence of pluviosity and reveal the anthropogenic contribution in some parts of the Juturnaíba Reservoir.Keywords: Hydrogeochemistry; major ions; trace metals; water pollution. ResumoA bacia de drenagem do rio São João possui um papel importante e estratégico para a Região dos Lagos, Estado do Rio de Janeiro, uma das regiões turísticas mais importantes do Brasil. Entretanto, o rápido crescimento econômico e o subsequente crescimento populacional na região geram impactos através das atividades antropogênicas, os quais incluem a contaminação por metais traços na agua superficial. O presente estudo tem por objetivo relatar o comportamento dos íons maiores e metais traços ao longo de uma campanha de amostragem de um ano, fornecendo informações sobre as suas principais fontes e controle geoquímico nos três principais compartimentos fluviais da bacia de drenagem. Os dados obtidos revelam que a pluviosidade é a principal responsável pela variação dos parâmetros químicos e dos constituintes dissolvidos da água. As contribuições geológicas e antropogênicas, as quais são as principais fontes para a carga dissolvida na água, foram analisadas pelo Índice de Química Inorgânica (IQI). Esses resultados corroboram a grande influência da pluviosidade e revela a contribuição antropogênica em algumas partes do reservatório de Juturnaíba.Palavras-chave: Hidrogeoquímica; íons maiores; metais-traço; poluição das águas.
