Hop (Humulus lupulus L.) is cultivated for the female flowers, or “cones,” which traditionally have been used as a bittering and flavoring agent in beer. Hop breeding historically relied on relatively simple selection techniques within established breeding lines. Supplementing current breeding material with new genetic sources would enhance a hop breeder's ability to select for new traits. The objective of this research was to assess the genetic relationship of H. lupulus var. lupuloides and H. lupulus var. pubescens accessions with hop germplasm currently utilized by hop breeding programs. A total of 60 hop accessions representing both cultivated (n = 21) and native (n = 39) Humulus were evaluated using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) molecular markers. The four primer combinations used generated 296 scorable fragments of which 176 (59.5%) were polymorphic. Principal components analysis and hierarchal cluster analysis showed the native American accessions clustering separately from the cultivated germplasm. Within each of the two main groups, two smaller subgroups were evident with H. lupulus var. lupuloides and H. lupulus var. pubescens segregated into unique clusters. This research provides the first molecular genetic evidence of H. lupulus var. pubescens and H. lupulus var. lupuloides being two separate botanical varieties. Results from this research suggest incorporating the native American hop accessions studied in this experiment would enhance the genetic diversity within hop breeding programs.

Registration of High Alpha‐Acid Male Hop Germplasm USDA 21267M

USDA 21267M (Reg. No. GP-37, PI 559093) male hop (Humulus lupulus L. var. lupulus) germplasm was released to the public 6 Dec. 2011. This germplasm has been used by the USDA-ARS for hop cultivar development for several decades. Nonagency interest in this germplasm was expressed, and release of this material is considered beneicial for the US public. USDA 21267M arose from a cross, made in 1973 involving the hop cultivar Comet and the USDA-ARS hop male germplasm 21110M. The deining characteristics of USDA 21267M are its high alpha acid levels observed in lupulin glands as well as good breeding value for yield, alpha and beta acid levels, and high xanthohumol levels. It is expected that hop breeders will use this germplasm as a parent for high-yielding, high-alpha hop breeding material. The release of USDA 21267M will give both public and private breeders new germplasm for varietal development.

Registration of high‐yielding aroma hop (Humulus lupulus L.) cultivar ‘USDA Triumph’

Brewers consistently look for new and unique hop (Humulus lupulus L.) cultivars that possess excellent flavor profiles and are cost effective to produce and utilize. Proprietary aroma cultivars have in some cases met this need but are costly to produce due to susceptibility to major plant diseases and primary adaptation for high desert climates such as that found in the Yakima Valley, Washington. In order to fill this gap, the USDA–ARS hop breeding program developed and released ‘USDA Triumph’ (Reg. no. CV‐30, PI 689549) to the public on 19 April 2019. The defining characteristics of this hop cultivar are high yields, broader adaptation across multiple environments, and excellence in brewing multiple beer styles. USDA Triumph arose from a cross made in 2000 between ‘USDA Nugget’ and ‘USDA 21110M’. USDA Triumph has exhibited high yields and disease tolerance across multiple states. It has been utilized in lager, pilsner, pale ales, and amber ales along with IPA brewing with excellent consumer reviews. The release and registration of this new cultivar provides brewers with an exciting new high‐yielding, widely adapted hop cultivar with excellent aroma and cost‐effective superior flavor.
