Registration of Drought‐Tolerant, Rust‐Resistant, High‐Yielding Pinto Bean Germplasm Line CO46348

Abstract: D rought stress reduces dry bean seed yield in most production regions worldwide (White and Singh, 1991). The release of pinto bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) germplasm CO46348 (Reg. No. GP-275, PI 651500) will provide plant breeders with drought-tolerant, pinto bean germplasm that takes advantage of a full growing season (95-98 d) and has high yield potential, excellent pinto seed quality, and resistance to rust caused by Uromyces appendiculatus. CO46348 was developed by the Colorado Agricultural Experiment Stat… Show more

“…Significant progress may require several cycles of selection and the use of multiple parents as sources of favorable alleles. Despite multi-genic inheritance, genotype 9 environment interactions, and environmental variability associated with tolerance to abiotic stress, bean breeders have developed cultivars and breeding lines with enhanced tolerance to many important abiotic stresses such as drought (Brick et al 2008;Muñoz-Perea et al 2006;Frahm et al 2004), low soil P (Beebe et al 2008;Lynch 2007), and high temperature (Beaver et al 2008;Rosas et al 2000a).…”

“…Similar to days to maturity, the most stressful conditions in Table 3. For example, more recently released CO46348 (Brick et al, 2008), Buster, and UI 320 (Myers et al, 2001) had the largest mean seed weight in the seven PS. As a market class, pinto had the largest mean seed weight (33 g 100 seeds −1 ) and red the smallest (29 g 100 seeds −1 ).…”
