Registration of Oat Cultivar ‘Hayden’

Abstract: Despite a signiicant decrease over the last 50 years, the production of oats (Avena sativa L.) presents both environmental and health beneits. When incorporated in crop rotations, oat has the potential to improve soil health and to break pest cycles in corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] rotations. In addition, the presence of a soluble dietary iber (b-glucan) in oat grain can help prevent cholesterol, coronary heart diseases, and type 2 diabetes. The development of new oat cultivars with super… Show more

“…A cluster analysis was conducted to select a sub-set representing the diversity in root system architectural traits from the panel. The sub-set included cultivars 'Clintford' [23], developed by Purdue University; 'Gopher', 'Deon', and 'MN Pearl', released in 1923, 2013, and 2018, respectively, by the University of Minnesota; 'Goliath', 'Hayden' [24], and 'Saddle', released in 2012, 2014, and 2017 by South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station; 'Kame', released in 2005 by the University of Wisconsin; and 'SD140327', an experimental breeding line developed by South Dakota State University. In addition, the cultivar 'Checota' [25], released by Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station, was included as a drought-tolerant check cultivar based on previous reports [12,26].…”

“…Experimental line SD140515, released as Rushmore in 2019, was evaluated in the SD CPT from 2017 to 2020 with other spring oat cultivars adapted to South Dakota: ‘Antigo’, ‘CS Camden’, ‘Deon’, ‘Goliath’, ‘Hayden’ (Caffe‐Treml et al., 2017); ‘Natty’ (Caffe‐Treml et al., 2020); and ‘Saddle’, ‘Shelby 427’, and ‘Warrior’. Heading date for Rushmore was close to the average of the trial; it was later than Saddle, Antigo, Shelby 427, and Natty but earlier than Goliath, CS Camden, and Deon (Table 1).…”
