Regolith breccia Northwest Africa 7533: Mineralogy and petrology with implications for early Mars

Abstract: Northwest Africa 7533, a polymict Martian breccia, consists of fine‐grained clast‐laden melt particles and microcrystalline matrix. While both melt and matrix contain medium‐grained noritic‐monzonitic material and crystal clasts, the matrix also contains lithic clasts with zoned pigeonite and augite plus two feldspars, microbasaltic clasts, vitrophyric and microcrystalline spherules, and shards. The clast‐laden melt rocks contain clump‐like aggregates of orthopyroxene surrounded by aureoles of plagioclase. Som… Show more

“…; Hewins et al. ). All meteorites display shock effects and the related shock pressures range from about 5–10 GPa to 55 GPa (Fritz et al. ). Numerical modeling of the ejection process from Mars indicates that the minimum shock pressure for ejection and delivery to Earth is about 10 GPa (Artemieva and Ivanov ). Ultramafic meteorites display relatively low shock metamorphism (~5 to ~30 GPa), whereas the mafic types are of a distinctly higher degree of shock metamorphism (~30 to ~55 GPa).…”

“…In contrast, the recently found regolith breccia NWA 7034 [ Agee et al ., ] paired with NWA 7533 [ Humayun et al ., ] and NWA 7475 [ Wittmann et al ., ], dated at ~4.44 Ga for the components of the breccia [ Nyquist et al ., ], may be more typical example of the Noachian crust [ Wittmann et al ., ; Hewins et al ., ]. While Gale crater is early Hesperian in age, the igneous basement rocks at the rim of the crater, which is the source for the clasts and sedimentary rocks in the crater, are Noachian, and so are likely to be similar in age to the Martian meteorite breccia.…”
