Regular intake of white kidney beans extract (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) induces weight loss compared to placebo in obese human subjects

Abstract: Scope Phaseolus vulgaris L. is rich in alpha‐amylase inhibitor and has been used for reducing glycemia and calories absorption through preventing or delaying the digestion of complex carbohydrate. A randomized, double‐blinded, placebo‐controlled study was conducted on obese volunteers to evaluate the degree of significate weight loss by regular intake Phaseolus vulgaris cultivated from Southwestern region of China. Method The volunteers were divided into two groups, homogeneous for age, gender, and body weight… Show more

“…Barrett et al systematically reviewed ten studies conducted between 2000 and 2010 evaluating the effect of Phase 2 ® products on body weight and glycemic control in subjects with overweight and obesity, demonstrating significant weight loss when the product was taken concurrently with carbohydrate containing meals. A recent metanalysis confirmed Phase2 ® PVE efficacy on body weight and fat change [65], results being confirmed by a recent Chinese RCT involving 120 subjects with obesity, in which the group treated with PVE capsules experienced a mean placebo adjusted weight loss of 1.95 kg after 35 days [66]. Conversely, another metanalysis conducted by Onakpoya et al including all kinds of PVE commercial products concluded for a substantial absence of efficacy of these towards weight loss outcomes [67].…”

“…Some of the remedies used in Tabuk area were previously approved for their efficacy in reducing weight such as ginger [10], cinnamon [11], green tea [12], coffee beans [13], chili [14], hibiscus [15], curcumin [16], kidney beans [17], and cumin [18]. We want to add that most of the studies on weight reduction remedies were performed only on animals, and very little studies were performed on humans.…”

“…In the most recent study, Wang et al [ 58 ] reported that obese participants supplemented with 2400 mg WKBE/day achieved a significant loss of weight and fat mass by, on average, −2.2 kg and −2.0 kg, respectively, following a 35-day intervention; this differed significantly from that reported in the placebo group. The reductions in the overweight percentage, BMI and body fat percentage were also significantly greater in the treatment group vs. the placebo group.…”

“…The haematology results from the most recent human study, including the red blood cell count, white blood cell count, platelet count and haemoglobin, did not change significantly with WKBE supplementation for 35 days, nor did they differ significantly from those given the placebo [ 58 ]. Likewise, serum biochemical parameters, including the total serum protein, albumin, glucose, uric acid and creatinine, did not change and remained within the normal ranges for these markers after a 35-day WKBE intervention in obese subjects, demonstrating the safety of WKBE.…”
