Regulation by Gonadal Steroids of Estrogen and Progesterone Receptors Along the Reproductive Tract in Female Lambs

Abstract: The regulation of estrogen and progesterone receptor (ER, PR) expression by estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4) in the oviduct, uterus and cervix of female lambs was studied. The animals received three intramuscular injections of E2, P4 or vehicle with an interval of 24 h and they were slaugthered 24 h after the third injection. Determinations of ER and PR were performed by binding assays and mRNAs of ERα and PR by solution hybridization. High levels of ER and PR in both cervix and oviduct were found in the f… Show more

“…which are important for fertility and reproductive outcomes. Differential expression pattern of genes of the oviduct were earlier analyzed by adopting molecular techniques like cDNA hybridization (Meikle et al, 2001), semi quantitative RT-PCR (Lok et al, 2002;Briton-Jones et al, 2004), real time PCR (Gabler et al, 2003;Kenngott et al, 2011) and microarray technology (Bauersachs et al, 2003;2004) in several species. However, to our knowledge, such studies on oviductal transcriptome profiling are scarce in bubaline species.…”

“…medial region; Forde et al 2009) or a pool of tissues from different regions (Mesquita et al 2014) was used for treatment comparisons. However, regional gradients of gene expression levels, previously reported in the reproductive tract of cattle (Bauersachs et al 2005), pigs (Buhi and Alvarez 2003) and sheep (Meikle et al 1997(Meikle et al , 2001, might be highly relevant for receptivity and pregnancy success. For example, early embryo transfer work determined that when two embryos were transferred bilaterally, the greatest chances of twinning were achieved when at least one embryo was transferred to the tip of the horn relative to the CL (Newcomb et al 1980).…”

“…This can be achieved if emphasis is placed, among others, on improving the reproductive parameters of the flocks; that is, if the number of lambs born per ewe at each lambing is increased through various reproductive techniques and adequate knowledge in physiology and endocrinology, since they are essential to improve the reproductive efficiency of the flock (Meikle et al, 2001;Cortez-Romero and Gallegos-Sánchez, 2014).…”
