Regulation of Ascorbate-Glutathione Pathway in Mitigating Oxidative Damage in Plants under Abiotic Stress

Abstract: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation is a usual phenomenon in a plant both under a normal and stressed condition. However, under unfavorable or adverse conditions, ROS production exceeds the capacity of the antioxidant defense system. Both non-enzymatic and enzymatic components of the antioxidant defense system either detoxify or scavenge ROS and mitigate their deleterious effects. The Ascorbate-Glutathione (AsA-GSH) pathway, also known as Asada–Halliwell pathway comprises of AsA, GSH, and four enzymes viz… Show more

“…Antioxidant enzymes play an important role in ROS scavenging [9]. Since we found a significant reduction in ROS accumulation following exogenous Si treatment, we measured the activity of key antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, POD, and CAT in tomato leaves and roots under different treatments.…”

“…ROS overload results in the oxidation of lipids, proteins, amino acids, and nucleic acids [7,8]. To minimize ROS-induced damage to biomolecules, a plant should efficiently utilize its antioxidant defense system composed of enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants [9]. The components of antioxidant defense system function collaboratively to keep the levels of ROS at optimal levels by a series of scavenging and/or detoxification processes.…”

“…In plants, H2O2 is scavenged by CAT, POD, GPX, and APX into water [43,44]. Compare to APX, GPX, and POD, CAT shows low affinity to H2O2 with a high processing rate.…”

“…The Ascorbate-glutathione cycle is reported as the most important anti-oxidation metabolic pathway participates in of H2O2 metabolism and redox maintenance [44,56]. Enzyme like APX, GR, MDHAR and DHAR are very important in this cycle where APX reduces H2O2 to H2O through oxidation of ASA to protect plants from oxidative damage under abiotic stress.…”

“…Glutathione reductase reduces oxidized glutathione (GSSG) back into GSH to maintain balanced levels of the later in cells (Lu, 2013). Ascorbic acid scavenges ROS through glutathione-ascorbate pathway and serves as a cofactor for various enzymes (Hasanuzzaman et al, 2019).…”
