Abstract:Cytoglobin is a heme protein of the globin family. Despite sequence homology with hemoglobin and myoglobin, cytoglobin shows a different heme coordination pattern. Instead of the single histidine, pentacoordinated heme iron of hemoglobin and myoglobin, cytoglobin shows bis‐histidine, hexacoordinate heme iron ligation. This is similar to the behavior observed in the related protein neuroglobin. Although conserved in most vertebrates, the function of cytoglobin is yet unknown. The changes in heme coordination le… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
