Regulation of magnetic relaxation behavior by replacing 3d transition metal ions in [M2Dy2] complexes containing two different organic chelating ligands

Abstract: Two [MIII2DyIII2] complexes (M = Fe for 1 and Co for 2) with mixed organic ligands were obtained. Complex 2 exhibits single molecule magnet behavior with Ueff = 64.0(9) K.

“…Interestingly, the structural topologies of the obtained complexes were indeed modulated by using one multidentate chelating ligand as the main ligands reacting with different auxiliary noncarboxylate organic ligands. For example, a Co 2 Dy 2 complex with a nearly linear topology was obtained when N 1, N 3-bis(3-methoxysalicylidene)diethylenetriamine and 2,6-pyridinedimethanol (pdmH 2 ) reacted with Co(CH 3 CO 2 ) 2 ·6H 2 O and Dy(NO 3 ) 3 ·5H 2 O. However, when pdmH 2 and Co(CH 3 CO 2 ) 2 ·6H 2 O were replaced by anhydrous FeCl 3 and triethanolamine (teaH 3 ), a Fe 2 Dy 2 complex with a “ Z ” structural topology was obtained.…”

“…Therefore, novel Co–Dy complexes containing mixed organic ligands can be obtained when H 3 L and dpk are employed, because the coordination atoms with different hardness can simultaneously coordinate with Co II/III and Dy III . 29…”

“…36,38 In addition, owing to the significant intrinsic magnetic anisotropy of Ln 3+ ions, 4f-based clusters have aroused attention from the area of molecular magnets. Dy(III)-based clusters with outstanding and notable single-molecule magnet (SMM) properties [39][40][41][42][43][44] were subjected to a lot of research efforts. The Tong group and Tang group have made groundbreaking contributions to the design and construction of lanthanide clusters with SMMs.…”
