Abstract:Fermentation is commonly used to produce food materials (beverages, dairy products), renewable fuels (hydrogen, ethanol), pharmaceuticals (antibiotics) and industrial chemicals (acetate, butyrate). In industrial fermentation, a specialised, pure microbial culture is normally used to generate specific products.
