Abstract:<b><i>Background:</i></b> The Lewis (Le) blood group system, unlike most other blood groups, is not defined by antigens produced internally to the erythrocytes and their precursors but rather by glycan antigens adsorbed on to the erythrocyte membrane from the plasma.
