Regulatory focus theory: Disentangling goals and strategies

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to develop and test the Regulatory Goals and Strategies Questionnaire (RGSQ) to promote conceptual and empirical clarity in the literature on regulatory focus theory (RFT). According to RFT, construing an end-state as a maximal goal (ideal, gain, and advancement) elicits the adoption of an eager promotion-focused strategy, whereas construing an end-state as a minimal goal (ought, non-loss, and security) elicits the adoption of a vigilant prevention-focused strategy. This means … Show more

“…This reveals the importance of regulatory focus. Our results further demonstrate the psychological differences in perceptions and needs of family managers (Higgins et al, 2001; Vriend et al, 2023). We show managers' psychological processes play a critical role in comprehending the motives of family firms in terms of adopting environmental strategy, further contributing to the understanding of the strategic process that fosters environmental sustainability (Dekker & Hasso, 2016).…”

“…While the existing literature shows that individuals respond differently to hybridity, Pache and Thornton (2020) called for additional investigations so as to better understand why individuals respond to hybridity in the way they do and what mechanisms influence these responses. To answer this call, our study reveals how individuals regulate their behaviour to pursue goals prescribed by different institutional logics and shows which strategies and tactics they implement to achieve them according to their regulatory focuses (Vriend et al. , 2023).…”

“…Because the interviews were conducted before the COVID-19 pandemic, it would be valuable to explore the evolution of self-regulation mechanisms during and after that health crisis. This would allow for a better consideration of the importance of context in self-regulatory mechanisms (Vriend et al. , 2023).…”

“…Meta-analytic and other reviews support the claim that human goal-pursuits follow the distinction between promotion and prevention, as they have independent effects on human behavior (e.g. Vriend et al, 2023). Moreover, there is considerable evidence that promotion and prevention predict action versus non-action choices in the laboratory (Crowe and Higgins, 1997) and in real-life settings including work behavior and management (Gamache et al, 2015;Hamstra et al, 2011Hamstra et al, , 2018Tuncdogan and Dogan, 2020).…”
