Li, female, 26 years old, breastfeeding, went to the doctor for the first time on May 10, 2022, because of "local redness, swelling and pain on the lower eyelid of the right eye for 3 days". 3 days ago, there was no obvious inducement, and the localized swelling of the lower eyelid of the right eye suddenly appeared, with severe itching, reddish, burning around the lower eyelid, pain and refusal to press. Specialist examination: VOD: 0.6, VOS: 1.0, swelling and compression of the bulbar conjunctiva near the puncta of the inner canthus of the right lower eyelid, redness around the lower eyelid, swelling, high skin temperature, palpable induration, and obvious tenderness (Figure 1), No pustular ulceration, hyperemia on the nasal side of the bulbar conjunctiva, transparent cornea, middle deep anterior chamber, atrial flash (-), round pupil, about 3*3mm, sensitive to direct light reflex, transparent crystal, optic papilla color positive side clear, C/D=0.3, the fovea reflex exists, the retina is flat, the left eye is (-), the tongue is red, the fur is thin and yellow, and the pulse is floating. Past history: breastfeeding for 3 months. Diagnosis of western medicine: right eyelid gland inflammation;diagnosis of traditional Chinese medicine: awn of wheat in the right eye (wind-heat guest eyelid syndrome). Pathogenesis: windheat evil first invades the eyelids, stays in the local veins, qi and blood are not smooth, and the hair is the main disease. Therapeutic principles: dispelling wind and clearing heat, reducing swelling and dissipating stagnation. Acupuncture method: local centro-square needling, Exercise acupuncture method in TaiYang acupiont.The specific operation is as follows: a) Flush: 0.9% sodium chloride injection 100ML, flush the conjunctival sac. b)Disinfection: Povidone-iodine is used for local routine disinfection, and the inside and outside of the eyelids must be strictly disinfected. c)Acupuncture operation: wear sterile gloves, use a needle of 0.30mm×25mm, and a temple of 0.30mm×40mm.

Epimedii Herba: A Promising Herbal Medicine for Neuroplasticity

Epimedii Herba (EH) is an herbal medicine originating from several plants of the genus Epimedium. It is a major therapeutic option for kidney yang deficiency syndrome, which is closely related to androgen hormones and also has been used to treat hemiplegia following a stroke in traditional medicine of Korea and PR China. To date, many clinical and basic researches of EH have shown the activities on functional recovery from brain diseases. Recently, neuroplasticity, which is the spontaneous reaction of the brain in response to diseases, has been shown to accelerate functional recovery. In addition, androgen hormones including testosterone are known to be the representative of neuroplasticity factors in the brain recovery processes. In this review, we described the neuro-pharmacological activities of EH, focusing on neuroplasticity. Thirty-three kinds of papers from MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, and CNKI were identified and analyzed. We categorized the results into five types based on neuroplasticity mechanisms and presented the definition of each category and briefly described the results of these papers. Altogether, we can suggest that neuroplasticity is a novel viewpoint for guiding future brain research of EH and provide the evidence for the development of new clinical applications using EH in the treatment of brain diseases. Jingui Shenqi Pills (JGSQP) have been a staple of traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years, used primarily as a treatment for kidney yang deficiency (KYD). In vitro analyses of JGSQP revealed strong induction of osteogenic differentiation and inhibition of adipogenic differentiation in bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem/stromal cells. However, the mechanisms by which JGSQP regulate the bone-fat balance in murine ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis with KYD have not been reported. Materials and Methods. Two-month-old female C57BL/6 mice were divided randomly into three groups: those receiving a sham operation (Sham); those undergoing bilateral ovariectomy and selection of KYD syndrome (Model); and those subjected to both bilateral ovariectomy and KYD syndrome selection for 8 weeks, followed by JGSQP treatment for 4 weeks (JGSQP). In the Sham and Model groups, mice were given the same dose of distilled water orally for 4 weeks. Animals from all three groups were euthanised at the 12th week. Vertebral microarchitecture and histomorphology were examined by micro-CT and H&E staining, respectively. In addition, we examined the mRNA expression of Akt, Wnt10b, Osterix (Osx), Fndc5, PPARγ, and Fabp4, as well as the protein of AKT, phosphorylation-AKT (p-AKT), BMP2, COL1A1, and FNDC5. Results. JGSQP treatment improved bone microarchitecture and mitigated histomorphological damage relative to the Model group. The osteoblast number (Ob.N/BS) and area (Ob.S/BS) were increased, whereas adipocyte number (adipocyte/tissue area) and area (adipocyte area/tissue area) were decreased in the JGSQP group. JGSQP treatment reduced the mRNA expression of Akt and adipogenesis-related genes (Fndc5, PPARγ, and Fabp4) while promoting osteogenesis-related genes (Wnt10b and Osx) mRNA expression. Additionally, the expression of p-AKT, BMP2, and COL1A1 proteins was increased and FNDC5 protein expression was decreased after JGSQP treatment. Conclusions. JGSQP treatment reversed murine ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis with KYD by controlling bone-fat balance via AKT pathway.
