Rehabilitation and strengthening techniques for reinforced concrete columns: review

Abstract: Reinforced concrete (RC) columns are the primary load-bearing structural components in the building which makes them most likely vulnerable to deterioration. Capacity deterioration of RC columns may result from dynamic loads, impact loads, poor maintenance, creep, non-standard design, corrosion of steel reinforcement and incorrect quality control. Therefore, RC columns should be always monitored for signs of deterioration. Rehabilitation and strengthening of existing reinforced concrete facilities have become … Show more

“…f us f co = 1 + k 1 •ρ α f cp f co (7) where ρ can be determined by using Equation (4), and the constant α can be derived from a regression analysis of test results. Notably, when ρ is equal to 1, Equation (7) becomes the equation for FRRP-confined circular specimens.…”

“…Concrete and steel plate jacketing methods are among the pioneer practices to strengthen RC columns in existing buildings by external confinement [5,6]. The mortar or concrete jacketing method has several disadvantages; the method is labor-intensive, time-consuming, and imparts additional weight to structures, as well as occasional difficulty during in situ application [7]. Furthermore, steel jacketing could induce problems involving corrosion and handling heavy steel plates.…”

“…Due to its superior mechanical characteristics and durability, the UHPC has been commonly utilized in a wide range of facilities, and studies about the UHPC performance has grown in recent years [12,[22][23][24][25][26][27].…”

“…Strengthening techniques are influenced by structure types and loading plans. For structures primarily subjected to static load, strengthening in axial direction as well as flexural direction should be considered, whereas it is more practical to increase shear and flexural strength for structures primarily subjected to dynamic force [4].…”
