Reinvestigation and new evaluation of representatives from the generaSemigordionus,Euchordodes,Pantachordodes, Dacochordodes andSpinochordodes (Nematomorpha)

Abstract: Some genera of horsehair worms (Nematomorpha) include only one or few species and the documentation of their cuticular structures in the original descriptions is not sufficient enough to compare them reliably to other species. We reinvestigate here the species Semigordionus circumannulatus, Euchordodes libellulovivens, Pantachordodes europaeus and specimens labeled as Spinochordodes tellinii from collections of the Museum fiir Naturkunde in Berlin. For comparison, data of Spinochordodes tellinii from a differe… Show more

“…This single character has been taken to name a new genus, Semigordionus (Heinze 1952), with one species from Austria. Zanca and Schmidt-Rhaesa (2006) found it more appropriate to regard Semigordionus as a member of the genus Gordionus, but did not formalize this step, because further investigations of the posterior end of S. circumannulatus should be awaited.…”

“…Nematomorphs are arthropod parasites and are found in freshwater and marine habitats. The freshwater nematomorphs or gordiids (Nematomorpha: Gordiida), are parasites largely of orthopterans, coleopterans, and mantids (Hanelt et al 2005) and contain about 350 species within 18 genera (Schmidt-Rhaesa 2001a; Zanca & Schmidt-Rhaesa 2008).…”

“…Approximately 350 species of gordiids have been described worldwide from 18 extant and 2 extinct genera (Schmidt-Rhaesa, 2001b;Zanca and Schmidt-Rhaesa, 2008). Despite a recent flurry of taxonomic activity on this group, only about 30 species have been recognized from North America (Schmidt-Rhaesa et al, 2016;Swanteson-Franz et al, 2018).…”
