BackgroundThe link between physical and mental health and screen time in adolescents has been the subject of scientific scrutiny in recent years. However, there are few studies that have evaluated the association between social network addiction (SNA) and metabolic risk in this population.ObjectiveThis study determined the association between SNA and anxiety symptoms with the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adolescents.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted in Peruvian adolescents aged 12 to 18 years, who completed a Social Network Addiction Questionnaire and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 2-item scale (GAD-2), between September and November 2022. A total of 903 participants were included in the study using a non-probability convenience sample. Sociodemographic and anthropometric data were also collected. Binary logistic regression was used to explore the association between SNA and anxiety symptoms with MetS in a cross-sectional analysis.ResultsMales were more likely to have MetS than females (OR = 1.133, p = 0.028). Participants who were 16 years of age or older and those with excess body weight were 2.166, p = 0.013 and 19.414, p < 0.001 times more likely to have MetS, respectively. Additionally, SNA (OR = 1.517, p = 0.016) and the presence of anxiety symptoms (OR = 2.596, p < 0.001) were associated with MetS.ConclusionOur findings suggest associations between SNA, anxiety symptoms, and MetS among youth. However, more studies are needed to better understand this association and to deepen the possible clinical and public health implications.

La educación en sueño resulta indispensable para los adolescentes de Bachillerato. La baja puntuación en la Sleep Beliefs Scale (SBS = 11,81) por parte de la muestra de 91 estudiantes españoles de 16,31 años (DE = 0,51), pertenecientes a dos institutos de educación secundaria de la provincia de Cuenca (España), ratifica su desconocimiento en esta rama de la salud. Ante la escasez de iniciativas educativas en este ámbito y la necesidad de atender y tratar el sueño en esta población, el objetivo principal del estudio es investigar la efectividad de un proyecto saludable integral dirigido al conocimiento del sueño a través de las clases de Educación Física (EF). Utilizando cuatro sesiones de EF, mediante una metodología activa centrada en el ejercicio físico y basada en la resolución de supuestos prácticos aplicables a la vida real, se hallaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas (p < 0,05) en la mejora del conocimiento del sueño al comparar el desempeño en la SBS del grupo experimental (pre = 11,95 vs post = 15,83) respecto al grupo control (pre = 11,67 vs post = 12,30) tras dos semanas de intervención. Con un incremento de un 19,5% en la evolución positiva de las respuestas sobre la escala en el grupo experimental, este tipo de programas resultan exitosos y factibles de incorporar a los planes de estudios. The low score on the Sleep Beliefs Scale (SBS = 11.81) by the sample of 91 students aged 16,31 years (SD = 0.51), belonging to two secondary schools in the province of Cuenca (Spain), confirms their lack of knowledge in this area of health. Due to a shortage of initiatives in this field and the need to address and treat sleep in this population, the main objective of the study is to investigate the effectiveness of a comprehensive health project aimed at sleep knowledge through Physical Education (PE) classes. Through four sessions of PE, using an active methodology centred on physical exercise and based on the resolution of practical situations applicable to real life, statistically significant differences were found (p < 0.05) in the improvement of sleep knowledge when comparing the performance in the SBS of the experimental group (pre = 11.95 vs post = 15.83) against the control group (pre = 11.67 vs post = 12.30), after a two-week intervention. With a 19.5% increase in the positive evolution of scale responses in the experimental group, such programmes are successful and feasible to incorporate into curricula. IntroductionIn the modern era, the maternal perception of children’s nutritional status has emerged as a critical area of study, given its potential influence on nutritional interventions and long-term child health. The relationship between this perception and children’s Body Mass Index (BMI) by age is particularly intriguing, as it may reveal discrepancies between perception and reality.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to evaluate Peruvian mothers’ perception of their children’s Body Mass Index (BMI) in relation to age and to determine how this perception associates with the children’s cardiovascular risk. The study also analyzed sociodemographic factors that might influence this perception.MethodsThe study included 130 mothers of schoolchildren aged 5 to 11 from a school in Lima. Mothers’ perceptions of their children’s weight were assessed using pictograms, and sociodemographic characteristics were collected through a questionnaire. Weight and height measurements were taken to calculate BMI, and waist circumference was measured to classify cardiovascular risk.ResultsA total of 57.4% of the schoolchildren presented with excess malnutrition, and 51.5% of the mothers incorrectly classified the actual BMI/Age of their children (kappa 0.11; p ≤ 0.05). Additionally, it was found that the schoolchild’s age is associated with the mother’s failure to accurately perceive her child’s weight (OR 1.59). Lastly, there was a significant association between maternal perception and cardiovascular risk (p ≤ 0.05).ConclusionThere is a significant discrepancy between maternal perception and the actual nutritional status of children, which can increase cardiovascular risk. It is necessary to implement intervention and education strategies targeted at parents to enhance the recognition and management of childhood overweight and obesity.
