Relating nematode community structure to different kikuyu-ryegrass pasture establishment methods

Abstract: Nematodes play an important role in agricultural soil in terms of their pest status and their contribution to soil quality, where they may serve as a valuable indicator of soil health. The aim of the study was to assess changes occurring in nematode community structure, as affected by soil tillage applied to high N-input and irrigated pastures in South Africa. Such practices were investigated by means of analysing diversity and ecosystem function indices, as well as the faunal profile, to enable analysis of th… Show more

“…Even though producers are usually eager to build soil organic matter, reducing tillage is not an option for these crops. Furthermore, for South African potato production systems, producers might have numerous fields equipped with irrigation, but because of water restrictions and a build-up of nematodes and soilborne diseases not all fields can be irrigated every year, thereby reducing the capacity of the soil to build up organic matter (Swanepoel et al 2021). The workshop delegates mentioned examples of land-use strategies that leading farmers follow.…”

“…Soil nematodes represent a major component of soil communities in terrestrial ecosystems, and play an important role in regulating nutrient cycling and soil health (Kouser et al, 2021;Li et al, 2021;Swanepoel et al, 2021;Wang et al, 2021). In the past few decades, the rapid development of molecular techniques has the potential to replace traditional morphological analysis (Floyd et al, 2002;Griffiths et al, 2018;Gao et al, 2021).…”

“…If nitrogen helps to the increase of the vegetative mass of grasses (Hendrik et al, 2021), the presence of phosphorus and potassium in the soil causes an increased resistance of the plants to winter frost and diseases (David et al, 2010, Agapie et al al., 2016, Agapie et al, 2018. With a short vegetation period, it is resistant to diseases and pests (Swanepoel et al, 2021). Doses of fertilizers, especially those with nitrogen, can be reduced if the Italian ryegrass follows rotation in the first year after a perennial legume or by growing in mixtures with a legume (Karakurt and Ekiz, 1999, Marian et.al., 2011, Rotar et al, 2016.…”
