“…In contrast, the lack of correlation between IgA-RF levels and clinical status conflicts with previous reports that IgA-RF is associated with disease activity (23)(24)(25). It should also be noted that, in some of the latter studies, the patients had early disease (23), and in others, the study populations included patients with rheumatic diseases other than RA (24,25). In contrast, our patients had well-established RA, and the treatment modality may have influenced the results.…”

“…These results are consistent with those of previous studies indicating a relationship between IgM-RF levels and clinical status (2b22). In contrast, the lack of correlation between IgA-RF levels and clinical status conflicts with previous reports that IgA-RF is associated with disease activity (23)(24)(25). It should also be noted that, in some of the latter studies, the patients had early disease (23), and in others, the study populations included patients with rheumatic diseases other than RA (24,25).…”

“…IgA-RF has also been demonstrated in mucosal fluids ofpatients with RA [2]. Measurement of IgA-RF in RA may prove to be clinically relevant because oithe reported association with disease manifestations, in serum, increased IgA-RF levels were found to be associated wilh progressive joint destruction and in mueosai fluids IgA-RF ieveis ofpatients with RA complicated with Sjogren's syndrome or sicea syndrome (the ocuiar part of Sjogren's syndrome) were reported to be higher than in mucosal fluids of patients with uncompiieated RA [3][4][5][6][7]. It is not known whether in patients with RA the produetion of IgA-RF at mueosai sites is the resuit of a generalized immune reponse or of a local stimulation of the mueosai immune system.…”

“…Elevated levels of IgA-RF were found in 44% of patients and correlated with the presence of bone erosions. In a retrospective study of 36 patients with RA (only 13 agglutination assay negative) Arnason et al [9] also found an association between IgA-RF and the occurrence of bone erosions. Teitsson et al [10] demonstrated in a prospective study of 33 patients, 28 of whom developed classical or definite RA, that elevated level of IgA-RF at presentation was associated with the development of bone erosions.…”

“…In varying patient groups elevated levels of IgA-RF were associated with the occurrence of bone erosions [9,10] and of extra-articular manifestations [11]. Increased levels of IgG-RF were reported to correlate with disease activity [12].…”
