Relation Between Mood and Self-Reported Dry Eye in Contact Lens Wearers

Abstract: Preliminary analyses suggest that self-reported mood is not related to dry eye status in contact lens wearers. Although symptoms are a hallmark of dry eye disease, they may not be significant enough such that they relate to affective states in the way they do for other symptomatic diseases with more associated pain (eg, arthritis).

“…However, if dry eye tests were used, no consensus has been reached regarding the optimal appropriate diagnostic criterion are or combination of criteria. 24,25 We did not assess certain factors such as wearing of contact lens, [26][27][28] LASIK surgery, 29 keratoplasty 12 eyelid and conjunctival disease, 30 allergic conjunctivitis, 31 seventh nerve palsy, 32 gout, 33 total body irradiation, 34 Sjogren's syndrome, 35 and participants' compliance with dry eye treatment, 36 which might be associated with symptomatic dry eye and diminished visual function.…”

“…Clinical tests and questionnaire outcomes and their order have been described extensively elsewhere. 22,24,27 As part of the battery of outcomes assessed during the examination, the patients were asked to complete a sociodemographic survey, a contact lens and ocular history survey, and a general medication survey (including medication usage). Likewise, clinical measures obtained during the examination phase have been described extensively elsewhere and included pre-lens lipid layer thickness and pre-lens tear film thinning time, soft contact lens water content and refractive index, tear film osmolality, slit lamp biomicroscopy of the anterior segment, tear meniscus height, phenol red thread testing, meibography, and corneal and conjunctival staining.…”

“…21 Kontakt lensin neden olduğu kuru gözü değerlendirebilmek için Mc Monnies'in skorlama yöntemi, Contact Lens Dry Eye Questionnaire (CLDEQ) hastaların semptomlarının değerlendirilmesinde, takibinde standardize edilmesinde yardımcı olmaktadır. 22 Gullion ve ark. 'nın 23 yapmış olduğu bir çalışmada günlük yumuşak kontakt lens kullananlarla %43 oranında kuru göz semptomları (bunların da %23'ü ileri derecede) bulunurken; kontakt lens kullanmayan olgularda %15 oranında (bunların da %5'i ileri derecede) bulunmuştur.…”
