Relation between the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program cycle and dietary quality in low-income African Americans in Baltimore, Maryland

Abstract: These findings suggest that the relation between the TSSD and macronutrient intake might be U-shaped, with higher intake of calories, fat, and protein in individuals in the very early and late stages of their SNAP cycles. Foods high in these nutrients might be cheaper, more accessible, and have a longer shelf-life than healthier options, such as fruit, vegetables, and whole grains, for SNAP participants when their benefits run out. Additional efforts are needed to investigate the effect of the TSSD on dietary … Show more

“…Among a sample of 244 African American SNAP participants[52], total energy intake and HEI dairy subscale score decreased as time since SNAP distribution (TSSD) increased for participants that received SNAP benefits ≤ 15 days before completing the dietary recall survey. Among participants that received benefits >15 days before taking the survey, total energy, total fat, saturated fat, and protein intake increased as TSSD increased.…”

“…7 Poor and underserved communities experience particularly low FV consumption rates, despite the existence of federal nutrition enhancement programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). [8][9][10] This is especially evident in southern states, such as Louisiana (LA). 7 To address these health disparities, the Institutes of Medicine, USDA, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have recommended nationwide interventions to improve dietary behavior and health outcomes, including the use of farmers' markets (FM) in low-income communities.…”
