Relationship between aerobic fitness and quality of life in female fibromyalgia patients

Abstract: The physical fitness of women with fibromyalgia, as determined by the Six-Minute Walk Test and the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire, has no direct relation with quality of life as the patients perceive it.

“…The average distance walked in the 6‐minute walk test by our female patients was 447.02 ± 83.54 m, which is higher than that obtained by Ayan et al. [23] in FM patients (432.8 ± 61.2, N = 29,53 ± 9 years) probably due to their older sample, but lower than those reported in other studies conducted in younger FM patients (N = 97, mean age = 46; 489 ± 96.4 m [56] and N = 69, mean age 45 ± 7.8 years; median distance 483 m [24]). “…To our knowledge, only one study [22] analyzed the association between lower body strength (isokinetic knee muscle strength) and tender points count and it did not find significant correlations. Other studies [10,23,24] analyzed the relationship between functional capacity and pain measured with the FIQ. They found no correlation between anaerobic threshold [10] and FIQ.…”

“…Illness impact was measured by means of the validated Spanish version of the FIQ questionnaire, 17 one of the most widely used tools in studies of the effects of physiotherapy on FMS 8,9 and consisting of a short 19-item survey designed to assess pain severity, daytime fatigue, morning tiredness, stiffness, anxiety, and depression, as well as the number of days when patients feel good. Scores range from 0 to 80, with higher scores indicating a greater effect of the condition on the patient's life.…”

“…In the FM population, physical fitness has already been evaluated to look for information related to cognitive function (Cherry et al, 2012), pain (de Bruijn et al, 2011, quality of life (Ayán et al, 2007), or physical function (Jones, Rutledge, Jones, Matallana, & Rooks, 2008). However, to our knowledge no information exists regarding the relationship between physical fitness and bone in this specific population.…”
