Relationship between age at first start and racing performance in Polish Thoroughbreds and Arab horses

Abstract: Genetic and phenotypic parameters for age at first start (AFS) and performance traits were estimated for Polish Thoroughbred and Arab horses using restricted maximum likelihood (REML) with an animal model. The traits representing a horse's racing performance were log of earnings (EA) and square root of number of starts (NS). Separate analyses per first racing season and whole career were carried out. The first racing season comprised 1 759 Thoroughbreds and 1 026 Arab horses. The racing results of whole racing… Show more

“…Other studies analysing data from TBs, 4,5 and Standardbred and Finnhorse trotters, 6 also reported higher earnings of early foals compared to late foals. Consistent with a previous study, 9 we did not observe a difference in the number of races run by the end of the second and third years of life between earlier and later-born foals.…”

“…In Finland, Standardbred and Finnhorse trotters born early in the season were faster, had greater earnings and larger number of placings than horses born late in the season 6 . Other studies have not reported an association between DoB and racing performance milestones or outcomes or, 7–9 conversely, reported that earlier born foals had a shorter racing career than those born later 10 …”

“…Although many horses have their first racecourse start at 2 years of age, some may not commence racing until 3–5 years of age (More ). Further studies indicate that the average age at first start for Thoroughbreds is two and a half years (Sobczynska ). Horses that make a racecourse start at a young age are described as ‘precocious’ with indications that early maturity may be influenced by variation at the myostatin gene ( MSTN ).…”

“…It is well known that evaluation of sires is more advanced compared with dams. Relationships between performance test and racing results have been estimated by many authors (e.g., Sobczyńska, 2010). Although these correlations are usually positive, new approaches to performance and genetic evaluation in horses are still in demand (Luehrs-Behnke et al, 2002;Lewczuk et al, 2004).…”
