Relationship between bovine carotid artery grafts for hemodialysis access and human leukocyte antigen sensitization

Abstract: Introduction: Bovine carotid artery (BCA) Artegraft is a biologic graft that can be utilized as a conduit for permanent hemodialysis access and has been shown to outperform polytetrafluoroethylene grafts. However, concern regarding immunologic sensitization may limit the use of BCA in the transplant candidate. Panel reactive antibody (PRA) is an immunological test utilized in transplant recipient selection whereas increases in PRA limit access to transplantation. The purpose of our study was to determine wheth… Show more

“…Recent improvements in processing of biological heterografts 15 and the available endovascular techniques nowadays for treating many complications related to vascular access 16 19 have led to a renewal of interest in using BCA for haemodialysis. 20 27 Our aim was to search for recent original studies comparing BCA with PTFE grafts and perform a meta-analysis in order to assess the short-term and long-term outcomes of BCA grafts when they are compared with those of the PTFE grafts, which are the most widely used grafts for vascular access.…”

“… Lindsey et al (2018) did a 15-year follow-up study on Artegaft used in lower extremity bypass surgery of 120 patients, yielding positive results for patency and salvage limb rates. Recently, the concern regarding the immunologic sensitization of artery xenografts in patients was also addressed ( Dyer-Kindy et al, 2020 ). Similar to an artery graft, a vein xenograft such as bovine vein-derived ProCol™ demonstrated their candidacy as an alternative to synthetic grafts through clinical trials in both hemodialysis patients and patients with critical limb ischemia for 14–20 months ( Hatzibaloglou et al, 2004 ; Schmidli et al, 2004 ).…”
