Relationship between Condylomata and Laryngeal Papillomata

Abstract: In a survey of 49 papilloma patients accurate maternal condyloma history was obtained in 31 instances and of these, 21 were positive for the presence of condyloma during pregnancy or parturition. Molecular virological studies indicate that positive hybridization could be demonstrated to human papilloma virus 2 in both laryngeal papilloma and condyloma by the Southern blot technique. Immunoperoxidase staining illustrated the presence of virus-related particles only near the surface of the mucous membrane papill… Show more

“…AOP patients reported more lifetime sexual partners and a higher frequency of oral sex than adult controls. A maternal history of genital condyloma at the time of delivery or during pregnancy among RRP patients has been reported to vary from 54% to 67% (Cook et al, 1973;Quick et al, 1980;Hallden and Majmudar, 1986). In a series of 109 JOP patients, only one child was delivered by Caesarean section .…”

“…Finally, research indicates that nonsexual modes of HPV transmission include perinatal transmission from an infected mother [53]. Vertical transmission of the virus occurs primarily during vaginal delivery [54], but HPV can also infect infants delivered by caesarean section [55] and can be transmitted transplacentally to the fetus [56].…”

“…Babies born to mothers with genital warts have, however, been noted to develop laryngeal papillomata, and some workers, believing that the papilloma virus may be acquired during the birth process, have suggested that extensive vaginal venereal warts may be an indication for delivery by Cesarean section. 34 Babies born to mothers with venereal warts need not be subject to special isolation in the nursery, nor need one take special precautions concerning rooming-in.…”
