Relationship between dietary carbohydrates intake and circulating sex hormone‐binding globulin levels in postmenopausal women

Abstract: The findings suggest that low GL or GI diets with low sugar and high fiber content may be associated with higher serum SHBG concentrations among postmenopausal women. Future studies investigating whether lower GL or GI diets increase SHBG concentrations are warranted.

“…Diet and nutritional status contribute to the etiology of the disease by influencing blood estrogen levels [ 19 ]. Huang et al showed that dietary factors can influence serum sex-hormone activity and concentrations [ 20 ]. Certain dietary fats have the potential to alter endogenous hormone metabolism, and fatty acid intake has been associated with increased levels of endogenous estrogen [ 21 ].…”

“…Experimental studies have shown that a high-fiber diet has a down-regulation role on inflammation and reduces CRP level (24). A diet rich in fiber could elevate SHBG levels (25) and thus decrease the level of bioavailable estrogens. On the contrary, in the study of Savaris, high dietary fiber-intake was associated with an increased risk of endometriosis (26).…”

“…11 On the contrary, low-carbohydrate diets, insulin sensitizers, and phytoestrogens can increase SHBG production by reducing liver fat production and ameliorating fatty liver so as to prevent the progression of ovarian pathology and restore reproductive function. [51][52][53] SHBG Levels and Lipid Metabolism Disorders in Women with PCOS PCOS with lipid metabolism disorders has been attracting increasing attention. PCOS patient dyslipidemia is mainly characterized by elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and triglycerides (TG) and low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL).…”
